Women Working in Male-Dominated Industries

Author: Rishan Cooray  Date Posted:8 March 2026

Across Australia, more women are stepping into industries traditionally dominated by men.

You see it on construction sites, in engineering firms, in commercial kitchens, across healthcare, and within businesses led by determined entrepreneurs. Progress continues because women step forward, build careers and lead change in sectors where representation has historically been low.

At Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Ballarat, we see this shift every day. Our role is simple. Ensure women have access to properly designed workwear, safety footwear and PPE so they can perform their jobs safely, confidently and comfortably.

This blog was written ahead of International Women’s Day 2026 to recognise the women in our community and the growing number entering industries historically dominated by men.

Women’s Workwear Available in Ballarat

Finding properly fitted women’s workwear has not always been easy. Many women entering trades, hospitality or healthcare have historically been forced to wear downsized versions of men’s garments or order products online and hope they fit correctly.

At Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Ballarat we work hard to ensure women can walk into our stores and find real options available immediately.

Our Wendouree and Delacombe Town Centre stores stock a growing range of women’s workwear, women’s safety boots and women’s PPE so customers can try products in person and find the right fit.

Women visiting our stores can find:

  • Women’s work pants and shorts
  • Women’s hi-vis shirts and jackets
  • Women’s safety footwear
  • Women’s chef uniforms and hospitality workwear
  • Women’s healthcare scrubs and medical uniforms
  • Unisex fit options were applicable

Our goal is simple. When women walk into our store, they should see workwear designed for them.

Why Women Need Workwear Designed for Women

Workwear designed for men has long been the default across many industries. The result is often poor fit, restricted movement and compromised comfort.

Women deserve equipment designed for the work they do, not downsized versions of men’s garments.

Traditional men’s workwear can create issues such as:

  • Poor fit around shoulders, hips and waist
  • Restricted movement when lifting, bending or climbing
  • PPE not sitting correctly on the body

Women’s fit workwear addresses these issues by using garment patterns designed specifically for female body shapes. The result is improved comfort, mobility and safety.

We explored this topic further in our previous article:

Leading by Example in Women’s Workwear

Women currently represent around 4.5 percent of trade-qualified workers in Australia according the the Master Builders Australia Data.

That statistic reflects the industry today. It does not dictate how we stock our stores.

Our commitment is to stay ahead of demand so women can walk into our stores and find real options available immediately.

For popular brands such as FXD Workwear and Bisley Workwear, our displays sit at approximately 30 percent women’s fit workwear. This is well above the current workforce representation in trades.

We believe retail stores should lead by example. Women should not need to search online and hope something fits. They should be able to walk into a local store and leave with workwear designed specifically for them.

The Industries We Support Every Day

The industries we serve are evolving.

Women are building careers across:

  • Trades, engineering and construction
  • Commercial cookery and hospitality
  • Business ownership and leadership
  • Healthcare and clinical services

Healthcare offers an interesting contrast. More than 70 percent of nurses are women, yet leadership roles across healthcare organisations often remain male dominated.

Across each of these sectors, properly fitted uniforms and PPE support safety, professionalism and confidence.

With an 80 percent increase in training for male dominated trades since 2019, according to BuildSkills Australia, the next generation of skilled workers will include more women than ever before.

We look forward to welcoming them.

Supporting Women Across Our Community

Our work extends well beyond retail.

Every week we support women across Ballarat through partnerships with:

  • Schools and training organisations
  • Community groups
  • Job placement services
  • Sporting clubs
  • Charities and local businesses

These organisations range from single-person trades through to multinational companies operating in the region.

One example is our ongoing support of the Federation University TAFE Awards for Excellence. Hip Pocket sponsors the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery award, recognising students who demonstrate outstanding skill and dedication to their craft.

Over the years we have seen many talented students pass through this program, including a growing number of women achieving excellence in their field.

In 2026 we were pleased to see the award presented to Emily Start for her achievement in Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. It is always encouraging to see the next generation of professionals stepping forward in industries that demand skill, discipline and creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women’s Workwear

Do women need different workwear than men?

Yes. Women’s workwear is designed using different sizing patterns that better match female body shapes. This improves comfort, mobility and safety compared to wearing downsized men’s garments.
An example we like to use to illustrate this point is the harness shape on our Height safety Equipment. Women generally find a Y or X shaped harness sits better across their chest where H shaped harnesses are common in this industry. Where women’s fit items are not available on display in-stores, our team can assist by sourcing better fit PPE and Safety equipment from suppliers on request.

Where can I buy women’s workwear in Ballarat?

Women’s workwear is available at Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Ballarat with stores located in Wendouree and Delacombe Town Centre.

Our Wendouree store is an excellent location for trying on clothing with the biggest range available for trying on and assembling your uniform options.

Our DTC store remains an excellent retail outlet, and its convenient location offers an additional point for customers to reorder or collect their custom uniforms.

What industries need women’s workwear?

Women’s workwear is commonly used in industries such as trades, construction, engineering, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and logistics.

Why is women’s PPE important?

Personal protective equipment must fit correctly to provide proper protection. Women’s PPE ensures protective gear sits correctly on the body, improving safety and reducing workplace risk. Form-fitting safety is also more likely to be used.

Looking Ahead

This year’s International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women around the world and within our own community.

It also reminds us that progress continues because women step forward into new industries and new opportunities.

At Hip Pocket Ballarat, we aim to play a practical role in that progress.

By stocking properly designed workwear.
By supporting employers building diverse teams.
And by ensuring women entering these industries have access to expert advice and equipment suited to their role.

We look forward to supporting the next wave of women shaping our industries for a better Australia.
